Ginger Candy (Ting Ting Jahe)
Name of village: Punten Village
Location: Food Industry - Ginger Candy

Issues and problems:

Many households in Punten village are involved in producing various types of ginger food products. The process and working environment are still based on very traditional and ineffective ways. The Alin Jaya Factory is involved in manufacturing of numerous food products (e.g.: Spinach crackers, apple crackers, soya crackers, etc.) but they are most notable for the production of Ting Ting Jahe (Ginger Candy).

The production of Ting Ting Jahe is a strenuous and tiring process that involves flattening of candy before cutting it into different sizes. One of the major problems that the factory workers faces is having to handle the candy right after it is freshly cook and this often leaves blisters on their fingers. There is also a lack of efficiency and safety as PVC pipes are used to flatten the hot candy before it is being cut manually into different sizes. The lack of efficiency is a problem as the workers have a quota of 9kg of candies to achieve and failure to meet this quota will result in deduction of their pay.

The workers are keen to develop a safer and environmentally-friendly system in the cottage industry that can also help to hasten the process of preparing the Ting Ting Jahe. The workers would also like to find other ways to earn additional income apart from working at the factory.

Issues and problems:

Based on their empathy study, the team has established the following key insights:

  1. There is a lack of efficiency in the candy flattening process.
  2. There is an inconsistency in candy size due to manual cutting.
  3. There is a lack of income for personal needs.

Needs statement:

  1. I need an effective and efficient candy flattening process.
  2. I need a consistent candy sizing process.
  3. I need to earn additional income apart from working at the Ting Ting Jahe factory.

Solution and Prototype:

For need statement 1: I need an effective and efficient candy flattening process. This prototype involves using a hand crank to control the rolling pin attached to flatten the candy. By rotating the hand crank, it will rotate the rolling pin which will ultimately flatten the candy that goes through the rolling pin. There are also different inclinations for the ramp.
For need statement 2: I need a consistent candy sizing process. The cutting board consists of a sliding tray compartment to easily slide in the tray used to contain the flattened candy. There are also different sizes of removable cutting blades to cut the candy into different sizes consistently. The cutting blade also improves the efficiency as it is able to cut the flattened candy into few smaller candies at one go.
For need statement 3: I need to earn additional income apart from working at the Ting Ting Jahe factory Tourism concept The team has developed a concept – tourism concept. The tourism concept consist of the factory workers earning additional income through organising various tours and activities in Punten Village for tourists.
